[OSSINING, NY] – On Wednesday, June 18th, 2025, Hudson Link for Higher Education in Prison, in collaboration with Mercy University, will celebrate the achievements of 18 graduates who are walking the stage at Sing Sing’s commencement ceremony. This year’s theme, “Overcoming the Odds,” highlights the resilience and determination of these students who have earned 16 associate’s degrees and 2 bachelor’s degrees while incarcerated.
“At Mercy University, we know education is a powerful force for transformation,” said Susan L. Parish, Ph.D., M.S.W., president of Mercy University. “Our partnership with Hudson Link for Higher Education in Prison reflects our deep commitment to expanding access and opportunity for all, regardless of circumstances. We are proud to celebrate the hard work and achievements of the remarkable students at Sing Sing.”
Founded in 1998, Hudson Link provides college education, life skills, and reentry support to currently and formerly incarcerated people in the greater New York area. Through partnerships with five correctional facilities, the organization has empowered thousands of students to break the cycle of incarceration and reclaim their lives through the power of education.
“Our graduates are living proof that education can change lives and create a more just and equitable society,” said Sean Pica, President of Hudson Link. “We are proud to support and celebrate their resilience in the face of adversity. This commencement represents more than individual achievement—it’s a powerful example of what’s possible when stakeholders work together to open doors to opportunity where they’ve long been closed.”
The 2025 Sing Sing commencement ceremony celebrates graduates’ hard work, resilience, and unwavering commitment to their education. Despite the challenges of navigating the criminal legal system and the stigma of incarceration, these students have demonstrated an unparalleled dedication to their studies and to building a brighter future for themselves and their communities.
“Education has been the key to unlocking my potential and giving me a sense of purpose,” said Valedictorian Kareem Cunningham, who will be receiving a bachelor’s degree. “This journey has not been easy, but the support and guidance I’ve received from Hudson Link has been invaluable. I am excited to continue my education and use my degree to make a positive impact on my community.”
As the graduates embark on the next chapter of their lives, Hudson Link will continue to provide them with the resources and support they need to successfully reintegrate into society and pursue their dreams. Through its comprehensive programs and partnerships, the organization is committed to breaking the cycle of incarceration and empowering individuals to transform their lives through the power of education.
“Education, in all its forms, is transformative within a correctional setting and serves as the foundation to both the Department’s mission and an individual’s success, said NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision Commissioner Daniel F. Martuscello III. “I am committed to supporting college programs because they make our facilities safer and foster a positive environment for both the incarcerated population and our staff. We are constantly encouraging our population to partner with Hudson Link to pursue their educational goals. By doing so, they open themselves up to endless possibilities and opportunities, empowering them to reach their full potential upon re-entry into the community.”
