Established in 1998, Hudson Link has helped over a thousand incarcerated people make a positive impact on their own lives, their families, and communities, resulting in lower rates of recidivism, incarceration, and poverty. Hudson Link also provides released students with ongoing alumni services, as well as transitional housing through the New Beginnings program.
Hudson Link for Higher Education in Prison is now looking for an Academic Coordinator to manage our college program at Shawangunk Correctional Facility.
Role Summary
Hudson Link is hiring for an Academic Coordinator (AC) to administer the college program inside Shawangunk Correctional Facility. The AC’s ultimate goal is to ensure student success in moving through the Hudson Link program to a degree from either Ulster Community College or Mount Saint Mary College. Please note that this position requires travel up to four days per week to Shawangunk Correctional Facility in Wallkill, NY.
What You Will Do
The Academic Coordinator serves the following groups of stakeholders by performing the listed tasks.
College and Faculty
- Work with college partners to establish schedule of classes to be taught each semester and term, and to recruit qualified faculty.
- Facilitate orientation to Hudson Link/College professors and volunteers regarding correctional departmental policies and procedures.
- Ensure that all teaching materials are reviewed and approved in an appropriate time frame.
- Conduct classroom observations and distribute/collect/submit course evaluations. Monitor faculty to ensure that number of hours of teaching are following the college’s policies.
- Build and maintain relationships with key college leaders and department heads.
- Meet regularly with academic advisors at the college and with other college departments such as registrar, admissions, financial aid etc. Establish rapport with college administrators to streamline the process for released students’ continuing education and services.
Students
- Recruit, maintain, and advise a student body of new and continuing students, and provide accurate information regarding policies and procedures, educational options, core and major requirements, curricular offerings and available support services.
- Foster and support safe and productive learning community.
- Monitor students’ progress toward graduation and coordinate annual graduation ceremonies.
- Oversee proper use of college computer lab and ensure computer lab protocols are followed.
- Maintain student database in Salesforce.
- Coordinate with Alumni Coordinator to facilitate pre-release services for transitioning students.
- Attend monthly Student Advisory Committee meetings.
Correctional Facility
- Build and maintain relationships with correctional facility leadership and key department heads.
- Supervise incarcerated clerks and professors.
- Make all necessary arrangements with the Educational Supervisor at the facility including gate clearances, student call-outs, classroom preparations, schedule for tours, special visits, etc.
- Complete all additional duties and tasks that may be required by the Correctional Facility and/or DOCCS.
Hudson Link Team (10%)
- Participate in all-staff and project team meetings as required
- Participate in other special projects, meetings, training/workshops, and events as requested by management
- Facilitate the contribution of student art work and writings to the Hudson Link newsletter.
Who You Are
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education in a related field
- At least one year program coordination experience in related field
- Proficiency in MS Office required; familiarity with Salesforce preferred
- Have reliable vehicle and valid driver’s license
- Strong communicator, relationship-builder, and critical thinker who displays strong judgment and can work with minimal supervision; highly organized with exceptional attention to detail
- Experience working with the criminal justice system and institutions of higher learning a plus
- Beliefs regarding corrections and rehabilitation congruent with the mission of Hudson Link
- Able to obtain volunteer status from the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (N.B. Does not exclude formerly incarcerated applicants)
